Don't hesitate. April 26, 2008 Anonymous Mum (Devon) 57 out of 58 found this review helpful
After reading various reviews on personal DAB radios I nearly gave up the idea. In the end I took the plunge and opted for the Roberts as we already have two Roberts DABs in the house which we love. I wanted the radio for walking the dog and the odd bit of jogging through the fields and lanes in Devon. Although the man in the shop said it's not designed for jogging, it seems to love it! It's amazing. Reception is brilliant, just the very occasional bit of burbling when you go into a dip to cross a river, but it doesn't mean you can't hear what's being said. Fits well into a pocket. Casing and controls feel really good. Buttons and control wheel don't get moved by accident, although there is a lock for the control wheel. Supplied earphones are fine, bit then I don't have an ipod so may not be very discerning in this respect. Although there are no presets, let's be honest, it's not that difficult to select a station using DAB is it. I'm using rechargeable batts. Receives about 28 stations in Devon, including all the bbcs and classic. Compared to FM and MW around here, there's no contest. Unless you live in an area where DAB is dodgy, just go and get one. It's my new best friend.
Why so few reviews for this? October 4, 2008 Call Me Al (Fife) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
There is no option to tinker with the sound settings - fortunately sound quality beats any other personal device of any sort I have ever owned. Its the best! Pop/rock etc is clear, bass is rumbly and midrange bright. It takes classical music to a new level for me. And, speach clear and authentic. There is a flywheel which accesses stations and settings. It is designed for right handers, but lefties will manage. The main text is nice and clear. The scrolling text is slightly blurry, but readable. You can opt to put the scolling text into the main window. The amber backlight looks cool and works well. I went straight to rechargables and always carry spares - that seems to be a common DAB issue. Battery life is better than the Bush I tried. Reception is fine - I live in Fife. Bizarrely, Radio Scotland can be patchy, but everything else is great. That's a broadcast issue. Reception then, is slightly better than the best of my other DAB radios. I'm amazed that this little chap hasn't attracted more review attention. For me, its glued to my ears every chance I get. If it has a fault, its that DAB broadcast isn't as good and as widespread as it needs to be. Not Roberts' fault, and its an issue which will affect any DAB unit. The RD 14 lives up to what I hoped DAB could be and I love it!
A Quality Mobile DAB Radio but with Non-Sensical Accessories December 2, 2008 Mr. Laurence Williams (UK) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
(I have added photos to the item page showing the controls and case as mentioned in my review below)
This RD-14 'Sport' radio is excellent for mobile DAB reception due to it's lightness, diminutive dimensions and economical power consumption.
*** Note Amazon have this radio listed 3 TIMES ! Search on 'Roberts 14' in the 'Electronics' department to see them all. It's worth checking each listing as prices differ....!
It is easily small enough to fit in a pocket and uses 2 x high-capacity rechargeable Ni-MH AA cells (with a minimum rating of 2200mAh I'd say) at a very economical rate. There is no built-in speaker or dedicated aerial...
It is perfect for listening to, for example, Test Match Special (which is usually broadcast on the BBC DAB station 5Live sports Extra) whilst at a match with headphones on.
Reception quality is fine, using the headphone lead as the aerial, but if signal break-up occurs you have the option of switching to FM; except you do of course lose access to DAB-only stations...
The illuminated multi-line LCD is simply huge and displays a wealth of information: either date/time/station/battery level/signal strength/scrolling DAB station information or just the station with full-page DAB station text (called DLS).
One minor irritation is that the screen illumination is only available by pressing a button - not very handy if you just want to check what's being displayed !
There are just 4 knobs: on/off, volume up/down and a multi-purpose jog-wheel which accesses available DAB stations by it being rotated or settings/modes by first pushing it in - it works very well.
Date/Time are set automatically, there is an auto shut-off facility and the jog-wheel can be disabled (to avoid accidental changes) by holding it in for a few seconds.
For some inexplicable reason the radio doesn't come with a case but a power adaptor is supplied. I can safely say that the power adaptor will NEVER get used (it's meant to be a mobile radio after all !); it would have been far more useful to get a case and/or a set of high-capacity rechargeable Ni-MH AA cells...

I have found the perfect case for this radio. It is a small hard-shell design, and exactly the right dimensions to hold the radio on one side (in a dedicated pouch) and the headphones/2 x spare batteries on the other side (in a dedicated pouch). It is sold by 'Boots the Chemist' and is meant to be for a digital camera; mine is blue in colour and it cost me £8.99 (Jun 08). It has a zip closure, a small carry-handle, a belt-loop and the material resists water.

So, all-in-all an excellent purchase with few competitors of comparable quality.

Works very well April 17, 2009 B. Lydiard (Hants UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Reception good indoors or out (Surrey/Hants), battery life good using Ni-MH rechargeables. Simple controls and feels solid enough. No problems.
Roberts DAB January 22, 2010 Stephen D. Coombs (England) Very impressed by this little radio,gd sound quality, set up easy, but as with most DAB's battery life so so.I use rechargable batteries most of the time and would advise carrying a spare pair.Weight of radio is ok,and will fit snugly into breast pkt.No preselected stations, but you do have a favourite option, however it dos'nt take that long to tune into any stations so not that much of a worry all in all a gd buy
